The Social Development Department works to ensure that all community members are able to maintain a basic standard of living. Clients who require social development assistance complete an application and needs assessment that is reviewed by the Department Director to determine the level of assistance each client may qualify for. Paqtnkek Mi’kmaw Nation’s Social Development Department recognizes basic Human Rights. Eligible clients must reside on the reserve and assistance may be available to non-band members, regardless of native status, who live in the community of Paqtnkek so long as they can provide proof of residency.
Social Development funds cover basic shelter, food, clothing and household maintenance. Additional funding may be available to parents who require child care while they attend a full-time educational program and some transportation costs are also considered in the needs assessment process.
Clients of the Social Development program can also apply for funding to cover the costs associated with special needs such as special dietary requirements, maternity clothing and layettes to new parents and comfort allowances for patients who may be in a care facility.
A portion of burial and funeral expenses are also covered by the Social Development Department for community member families who may need support during a most difficult time in their lives.
